Jessie Street National Women's Library | Weaving Women's Stories competition

Weaving Women's Stories

About the competition

As part of its 20th anniversary celebration, Jessie Street National Women's Library, in conjunction with Inner Wheel Australia District A51, invites contributions to a competition. We are asking for stories about the lives and experiences of Australian women who are not well known. Write the story of your grandmother, your mother, or your own story.

Entries must be original, not previously published, no more than 3000 words and typed single sided on A4 paper. Please put word count on your entry.

A luncheon will be held to announce the two prize winers, make the awards of two substantial book tokens and hear the winning story. A selection of these stories will be published on the Library website. Author Libby Gleeson will be guest speaker.

About the Tapestry Project

One of the aims of Jessie Street National Women's Library is to put women into an historical perspective. The Tapestry project is one way of achieving this.

Little is documented about the lives of 'ordinary' Australian women. The Tapestry Project asks people from all cultural, ethnic, religious and socio-economic backgrounds to send in the stories of their grandmother, mother, sister, women friends - or their own story - which will be collated and preserved as a significant historical collection.

The women whose lives and experiences are told are those whose names do not appear in our history. Their stories form the social background to the development of this country and are preserved in JSNWL archives as a valuable resource for researchers.

Stories contributed to Weaving Women's Stories competition will be archived with the Tapestry stories. We look forward to receiving your entries.

All women's lives are interesting. All women have interesting stories to tell. Weave your story into our Tapestry.
